Hyderabad: An increase in awareness about long-lasting implants, pain-free and shorter duration surgeries has led many, even patients below 60 years, to opt for knee replacement surgery in India. A living testament of the number of knee replacement surgeries taking place in India is Dr Akhil Dadi, the Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon, Founder, and Chairman and Managing Director, Srikara Multispecialty Hospitals.

Dr Dadi, a fellowship holder in joint replacements from Germany, has set a personal World Record of performing more than 30 knee replacement surgeries in 13 hours. Over the past 11 years, Dr Dadi has done about 10,000 Oxinium implants and 22,000 knee replacements at Srikara Hospitals, which is considered to be the second highest in India.

Founded in 2013, Srikara Multispecialty Hospitals started off with over 100 employees and 20 doctors. The hospital chain now has its presence across seven facilities in Hyderabad (RTC X Road, Miyapur, LB Nagar, Kompally, ECIL, Peerzadiguda, Lakdikapul), and two in Andhra Pradesh (Vijayawada, Rajahmundry), with nearly 1,000 beds, 2,000 employees and 350 doctors.

“Our biggest achievement is that we put down our foot very strongly when a person does not require surgery. A knee replacement surgery is conducted only if it is very necessary, and we extend the same principle to all the specialties in our hospital. With this policy in place, we stand first in South India and second or third in India as far as knee or joint replacement surgery is concerned,” Dr Dadi, well-known for joint replacement and spine surgery, told Bizz Buzz.

The hospital clocked about Rs9-crore revenues in the second half of its first financial year 2013-14. In FY14-15, Srikara Hospital posted Rs30-crore revenue. They are looking to close above Rs330 crore in FY24-25.

“Probably we are the only group in the country and in the world who has seven robotic systems for performing knee replacements, and the only one in Asia using robotics for knee replacement. We are top in the world to perform the number of Oxinium implants, and India has the highest number of Oxiniums done. As this knee implant lasts for 30 years, we see many young people below 60 years in India getting this surgery,” Dr Dadi, also a member of the World Orthopaedic Concern and Indo-German Orthopaedic Foundation, said. The hospital has an advanced i-Suite Operation Theatre featuring four integrated modular operating rooms designed specifically for joint replacement and complex surgeries.

Over the next 10 years, Dr Dadi plans on having 20 branches across India (including the current nine branches), with total 5,000 beds. Moreover, the hospital chain will expand its headcount to 4,000 doctors and employees over the next five years. Srikara Hospital will start off expanding presence by entering new geographies like Bangalore or Chennai, for which Dr Dadi will be looking for investments from private equities in the next six months. Depending upon the need, the investment will be raised, wherein to set up each bed at a rental place will cost Rs25 lakh, and each bed at a self-owned property will cost over Rs50 lakh.
